Finally, able to join the Cameron ride, Jim Thompson Ride. Credit to Pete, PCC that organize this event. The event is FOC.

The Loop
Approximately 46km in total, the loop will take us through vegetable farms, orang asli villages, jungle and tea plantation via a combination of tarmac road, broken tar and jungle tracks that will send you down and then up elevation of over 3000ft. Highlight will be a continuous 12km descent involving an elevation drop of 2000ft! Then you get your payback – a 15km grind back up to the Boh Tea plantation where the finest tea and scones on this side of the world await your arrival. But these are not the only rewards. After that you get another 6km downhill blast on some nice twisty narrow roads inside the tea plantation.

The Plan
Official plan is to drive up to Cameron Highlands on Sat 13, savour all the tea we want and do the ride on Sun 14 before driving back to KL on Mon 15. So that means you will need to take a day off work on Mon unless you plan to drive home the same day after the ride. We shall start the ride from the Shell Station in Ringlet on Sun where we will catch some breakfast before proceeding to the petrol station at 8.00am SHARP. Of course we will also have to pre-pack some lunch as the average rider is expected to reach the Boh Teahouse at between 2.00 to 3.00pm, all depending on how big your lungs are to tackle those little hills inside the tea plantation (and the long climb of 15km before that). You will also need to carry sufficient water so a 3-litre bag would be in good order. But we understand there’s a store at an orang asli village at KM31 to refill so make sure you carry some cash with you.

And then we shall catch up for a steamboat dinner in Brinchang to exchange tall tales and share the joy of our little adventure, most likely over some alcoholic (as opposed to pedalholic) stuff.

For our Muslim friends, sorry that due to our rather tight calendar of events, the ride has to clash with the fasting month.

Participation
Fresh air and sunshine are free so participation is FOC too. All you need to do is to make your own travel and lodging arrangements and meet us at the Shell petrol station in Ringlet on Sunday morning. Remember, the ride will take off immediately after a briefing at 8.00am SHARP. If you show up late you gotta find your own way.

NO HELMET NO RIDE!!!

THINGS TO BRING ON THE RIDE
o A mountain bike that’s tip top in condition and helmet
o Usual spares, mini pump and personal first aid kit
o 3-litre water bag and energy food/drinks of your choice
o Packed lunch to be eaten anywhere on the trail when you are hungry
o Plastic bags to waterproof your electrical gadgets
o Lightweight waterproof windbreaker in case of rain (and it frequently rains in Cameron!)
o Mobile phone and walkie talkie (if you have – Channel 5.0)
o Some kind of lighting (you never know when it will come in handy!)
o Some cash for refills at store at KM31 and at the Boh Teahouse
o A good sense of humour

Day 1, Flight delayed for an hour. Around 4:20pm take off. The 4 hours flight to Denpasar International Airport. Meet with our transporter, when to our first Bali restaurant. "Ayam Penyek" means fried chicken. Then check-in into Hotel Ferbis.

River Crossing ?

Wait 2 hours in Denpasar Int.Airport.
Takes 4 hours flight back from Indo.Bali.
Wait for 2 hours at Lcct then another 1 hour home.
Finally 5 hours drive from Seremban to Kulim.

Well, what worth to be recorded is the last 5 hours drive.
Just after Damansara Toll, I crash into walls of rains. Wave of strong wind kept my speed down to 60-70kmh. After the heavy rain, tick mist. Then the rain again, then misty. The cycle repeated until I am out from North South Highway.

Take a small road back to kulim from Bandar Baharu. Small rain and mist kept visibility low. Half of the journey, saw opposite car flashing spot light to me. Then I saw a smoking motorcycle on my right.
"Oh shxxxxt!~" I crash into a pool of water. The road are flooded, deep. The "road" just gone. Flatten by flood that looks more like a river crossing. I can feel the impact dropping speed from about 60kmh to 20kmh. The gearbox changed gear from 3rd to 2nd .. Without any options, I step on gas.

Water covered my head lamps ... car pushing hard. At some part, water up to car bonnet. Barely navigate base on some reflector stick that usually on road site.

Worst, what's a head is strong current always pushing me to right. With luck or the force with me, some shallow point of the tar road always allow me to navigate back. Then I notice on my left and right is just sea of moving water, not knowing what's in front. Plan for the worst, I open up my windows just in case being wash away. Not too long later, I saw lights from opposite direction! I know I am close. The lights is from a jeep stopped in front of the flood.

Instinctively, I tough the car flashing light just to notify me on that, until I focus back to the road. There are no road lights around and if not the bike besides, it's just plan dark pool of water. Weird things is, my car interior still clean and dry ... hmmm...

How to cold a Can of Coke from room tempeture to 35F

Putting Can of Coke into freezer would be about 20-25 minutes. If you put it in a bucket of ice, that would halve that time. If you put water in that ice, it'd be cold (+- 5c) enough to drink in about 4-6 minutes, if you put salt in that water, you'd reduce the chill time to just over 2 minutes. Agitating the can in the water, rolling it around, reduces the chill time even more.

The fastest possible way is to grab a CO2 fire extinguisher and unload that sucker on the can.

For the geek:
Start with Newton's Law of Cooling. You can work from the last equation, but to solve it you need to measure the can's temperature again. Given the can's initial temperature of 89F and its temperature T₁ at time t₁, you can solve for t₂, the time it'll take to reach 35°F.

t₂ = t₁ × ln[(89°F - 32°F) ÷ (35°F - 32°F)] ÷ ln[(89°F - 32°F) ÷ (T₁ - 32°F)]
t₂ = t₁ × ln(19) ÷ ln[57°F ÷ (T₁ - 32°F)]

Snake encounter

I have frequent encounter with snake on bike trail. Usually during 11am - 12 noon. It might because these cold blood needs sun light to re-generate energy.

Conclude with friends experience with snake in the area. One of the snake I meet in Mount Erskine likely to be an adult king cobra or just cobra.

Although cobra bite cases in Malaysia are mark as infrequent. But I really don't want to be part of the minority. So, no more riding alone.

Cobra is a type of snake that eat other snake. King Cobra main food is rat snake. That's make it shown near to human resident.

Python on the other hand are slow. Not as aggressive.

PS3 Slim........ Alright this is my 2nd set of Playstation 3. PS3 FAT just give up on me 2 months back. RED BLINK OF DEATH. The known issue on PS3 Fat is Yellow Blink of Death. The blink itself notify that a hardware failure. I am not sure what is the RBD then.

Glad I have take the white version. It looks impressive ^^

Start of my riding by joining different groups and cycling clubs. A year back, I was joining Jamboree (Planned route, usually well organized) or group rides organize by cycling clubs. Meat lots of great friends that influence me into cycling.

Moving forward, I join a bit of downhill. Riding rough terrain, do drops and small air. Learn to descent in steep slope. Progression of my skill keep things interesting.

Months back, I have move to Penang. Riding life gets really sparks. First being introduce to trials along the coast. It is an eye opening trial. Then the do or die Penang Hill downhill route.

Today re-visit a group ride in-land route, it put me to write this down. It is still fun to ride, good descent, meeting nice people. BUT Nothing beats PENANG HILL - TIGER HILL-AIR ITAM!! The taxing up hills and the long descent. The best descent, narrow, fast and flow TIGER HILL.

Malaysia just covered by Palm Oil. Many in-land ride it is just pure Palm Oil scene and Getah. Nothing else. No much of natural trials.

I am so glad to enjoy all of these..

Penang Hill Trial

Alright, today is my second trip of riding at Penang Hill. Can't help but hope to type in some simple ride review and "how to get there" information.

*Google does not show any ride review about the trial yet.

Most of the trial only accessible with the connected group. Lucky enough I was bring up the xc trial by Jason and a Downhill trial organize by Ah Wei. Well guided by Kenneth.

Penang Hill Jamboree trial - It is not [The] Penang hill Jamboree, but we take the similar route.

Driving to the trial head
Over Penang Bridge head towards Batu Feringghi. Watch for Tesco on your left. From here the route is basically following the main road then you will reach there. Look for Taman Bunga / Taman Botenica on sign board to confirm you are at the right course. Park in-front of the gate. You can grab a fruit juice before the main car park.

The route:
Climb start from Gate at Taman Bunga - Then connect to Tiger Hill Trial - Super fun Descent over some gardens - chanlenging climb in middle of jungle - Another descent pass Air Itam Dam - End at side of Kek Lok Shi.

Start about 8 30 am. The climb is hard. Steep and with very minimum no so steep stress. Put is this way, a 5.1km tarred road climb that popular known as "Jeep Track". You can take a rest at Pit Stop 84. Other then Sunday, you can grab a drink here.

Then at point 120 turn left towards Tiger Hill trial. Mostly on covered on siman. About 8.1km. From here we also pass by the Penang Hill Cable car route. Currently on maintenance. The view is great. There are section that wide open to see full view of Penang city and sea view. I think is much more impressive viewing from top of Penang hill. No obstacle here. Flat or small climbs from here.

Then we reach a point of fast descent. Tight hair pin means hard braking. Taxing my brake to the limit. Then descent cross through farming garden. Very en lighting feeling crossing plantation at high speed.

Too bad, the fun end about 5 minutes. Another taxing climb. Great jungle single track. Some mud to keep you alert.

Then a long descent. Some fallen tree block the flow. Watch up for wooden or bamboo bridge. The grip is vary. More challenging after your friend lay some mud on it.

Eventually it connects back to tar road use by local. The traffic is minimum. Watch out for bikes. Having a MotoGP style descent is fun but risky. Then we reach Air Itam dam. This is travel spot, from here road traffics will be medium. The good news is, it is still descending.. Until you reach the flat. It is a travel spot for Kek Lok Shi here. So lots of nice foods, drinks around. Can have another Pit Stop here.

Then ride another 5km on road back to Taman Bunga to get our car.

Total about 30km. Not much but intense. Steep climb and fast descent. End around 12 noon.

Other notes
It is normal to sport the largest ant through the trial. Normally about an inch. Lucky enough you can spot an inch and half.

Why there are no photos? This is my own question and answered now. To grab a descent picture, I need to grab my SLR. But is too risky to have it in my bag for fast descent, jumping and drops. Bad pictures from websites like this malaysiatravelguide site will just put off the mood visitors.

Your are always shaded. So there are no need for sun block or worry about the hot whether at noon.

Mount Erskine

My first impression on Mount Erskine ride was a month ago. It was few hours ride. Yesterday, with Jason, I was able to taste the speed of Mt. Erskine offers. First, you go up and down using the same route. There are no junction in between. No worries, you won't get lost.

Check out the picture bellow, it is wide. Jumps and gaps are labeled with Helmet/Bottles. If you are XC. It's better to avoid these.

Trail section are clearly label too. There are numbers along the trails 1 to 24 (If not mistaken). DH is roughly until 16. Where later you will need to pedal.

From trail top to end, there are lots of Table Top, about 4 gaps, drops and well design perm. These 'obstacle' is locate middle on the trail. Only if you can clear the these, then you really enjoy the 'Flow' riding down hill.

Jason above. "Penangkia si beh fit". Especially those that race Dragon Boat.

This is the "usual" trail I rode is tight and technical. Natural terrain cause by rain, roots and rocks came up. That what makes Mt. Erskine special. It is not only well maintain, soil put on top provide a 4 cross like smooth path. Surprises that with just after rain, there are no pool of mud. Perfect!

Mount Erskine Location:
Park at the wet market car parks. During weekend, there are riders XC or DH gathers here. You know where you are.

Before heading to new place, for work and exploring of new trails. Had very nice gathering with different group of friends. So many photos taken, beers , vodka, whatever mix liquor when drink drank drunk session.

Short Stem and RaceFace Atlas handlebar

Every time when I want to write a review on something. I just feels like lack of experience or knowledge, because you always can find a better reviews some where else.

So, I just start with layman, basic review from a beginner point of view.

Changing stem from 80mm to 30mm. Result a very direct feelings on turning and handling the bike. While very wide bar feels like "Power Steering". In terms of Downhill, it improve a lot. Gap, uneven terrain bump into your shock and to your wist. Due to the longer bar, much less to prompt into situation that the impact move your front wheel direction. You have more power and control now. However wide bar means you will need to take care of your finger in narrow track.

Shorter stem contribute to more Feel kind of handling.

The RaceFace anodized color is just AWESOME.
